Feds to investigate?

Given the
troubled history of the Tennessee Highway Patrol under Bredesen's tenure in office, legislative leaders are calling for an independent, federal investigation of the illegal background checks:

Democrats and Republicans are now calling for an investigation into criminal background checks that were allegedly performed on legislators, political candidates, and even news reporters by Lt. Shirley.

House majority leader Gary Odom questions why Lt. Ronnie Shirley would be looking into the database of serious crimes.

Odom says, "As far as I know is not involved in investigating serious crimes.....why he had access to this database?"

Republican minority leader Jason Mumpower says he recently received a THP arrest report from more than a decade ago on a Republican political candidate who wasn't convicted, the case supposedly cleared.

Mumpower says, "The record was expunged so we know that the photo copied report could only have been obtained illicitly."

WVLT has the report.
