Bredesen crony placed on administrative leave

Brad Schrade has the
latest word from the Bredesen administration:

A politically connected Tennessee Highway Patrol lieutenant ran background checks on 182 people, including at least two journalists and one country singer, the patrol’s top two officials said today.

No names of those whose records were reviewed by Lt. Ronnie Shirley came out at the press conference this afternoon put on by state Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell and THP commander Col. Mike Walker. However, they did say that no elected officials’ names were on the list.

The officials said they had placed Shirley on administrative leave.

Shirley was at the center of another major political scandal a few years ago, when it was revealed that he fixed a speeding ticket for then-Deputy Gov. Dave Cooley.

A veteran with almost 20 years’ experience with the Highway Patrol, Shirley currently serves as its liaison to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. He was paid $69,408 for the 2006-07 fiscal year, according to state payroll records.
