Turning political tricks?

Are the Democrats using the THP for political dirty tricks? House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower joins the House Democratic Leader in calling for the Bredesen administration to come clean on the alleged illegal background checks performed by Lt. Ronnie Shirley.

The top Republican in the state House on Monday joined a ranking Democrat’s call for an outside investigation to look into allegations the Tennessee Highway Patrol may have been abusing the criminal background check system to dig up political dirt on enemies.

State House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower joined House Democratic Majority Leader Gary Odom, who on Friday said he was concerned that as many as 300 people may have had their confidential records probed by the THP.

Both top legislative leaders want the names on the list made public to determine the motives behind the alleged unauthorized criminal background checks. They also want those whose privacy may have been violated — both private citizens and state employees — to be notified.
